Greeting – Carol Hills
Heavenly Father, we come before You humbled and open, longing for spiritual renewal. As we lift our voices in worship, we breathe fresh life into our spirits. Restore our weary hearts and renew our minds so that we may walk faithfully in Your ways. May this time of worship rekindle our passion for You and deepen our relationship with Christ. Empower us to live as vessels of Your love and light in the world. We ask this in Jesus’ precious name. Amen.
Please stand as you are able at *.
*CALL TO WORSHIP (responsive) Carol Hills
One: As Methodists, we have been called “A Singing People”
ALL: We love singing praises to God- it warms our hearts,
One: In his Directions for Singing, found in the United Methodist hymnal, John Wesley encourages us to learn the hymns in the hymnal before all other songs.
ALL: He says that we should all sing together as frequently as we can! That even for those who find it a cross to bear, singing will be a blessing.
One: He says we should sing lustily and with good courage and to beware of singing as if we were half dead or half asleep.
ALL: We lift up our voices in strength! We strive to unite our voices together to make one clear melodious sound to God.
One: We sing together: hymns that we love, clearly and melodiously, with strength and modesty, in time and in tune - an act of fellowship and worship.
ALL: But above all we sing spiritually, with an eye to God for every word we sing.
One: Today as we sing and learn, may we worshipfully and continually offer our hearts to God.
ALL: We sing today and every day until that time when we sing before the throne of God. Let us worship God in song! Amen!
Songs led by Caroline Wendel and Nicole Day
*Hymn #156 “I Love to Tell the Story”
I love to tell the story
of unseen things above,
Of Jesus and his glory,
Of Jesus and his love.
I love to tell the story,
Because I know ‘tis true;
It satisfies my longings
as nothing else can do.
I love to tell the story,
‘twill be my theme in glory,
To the old, old story
Of Jesus and his love.
I love to tell the story;
More wonderful it seems
than all the golden fancies
Of all our golden dreams.
I love to tell the story,
It did so much for me;
And that is just the reason
I tell it now to thee.
I love to tell the story,
‘twill be my theme in glory,
To the old, old story
Of Jesus and his love.
I love to tell the story;
‘tis pleasant to repeat
What seems, each time I tell it,
More wonderfully sweet.
I love to tell the story,
For some have never heard
The message of salvation
From God’s own holy Word.
I love to tell the story,
‘twill be my theme in glory,
To the old, old story
Of Jesus and his love.
I live to tell the story,
For those who know it best
Seem hungering and thirsting
To hear it like the rest.
And when, in scenes of glory,
I sing the new, new song,
‘twill be the old, old story
That I have loved so long.
I love to tell the story,
‘twill be my theme in glory,
To the old, old story
Of Jesus and his love.
1st READING: Exodus 19:2-6a (NRSVUE) Carol Hills
They journeyed from Rephidim, entered the wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness; Israel camped there in front of the mountain. Then Moses went up to God; the LORD called to him from the mountain, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob and tell the Israelites: ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now, therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.”
Psalm 100 with response #2 UMH Page 821 Carol Hills
Response: Make joyful noise, lift up your voice! Ye nations of the earth, rejoice!
R
Make joyful noise to the Lord, all the lands!
Serve the Lord with gladness!
Come into God’s presence with singing!
Know that the Lord, who made us, is God.
We are the Lord’s;
We are the people of God,
The sheep of God’s pasture.
Enter God’s gate with thanksgiving,
And God’s courts with praise!
Give thanks and bless God’s name!
For the Lord is good;
God’s steadfast love endures forever;
God’s faithfulness to all generations. R
2ND Reading: Romans 5:6-11 (NRSVUE) Carol Hills
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Much more surely, therefore, since we have now been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Gospel Reading: Matthew 9:26 to 10:8 (NRSVUE) Carol Hills
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus and Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him.
These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not take a road leading to gentiles, and do not enter a Samaritan town, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Cure the sick; raise the dead; cleanse those with a skin disease; cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.
Pastor: The word of God for the people of God.
People: Thanks be to God!
Hymns:
#534 “Be Still My Soul”
Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to your God to order and provide;
In every change God faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: your best, your heavenly friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
Be still my soul: your God will undertake
To guide the future, as in ages past.
Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
The Christ who ruled them while he dwelt below.
Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be till, my soul: when change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.
#504 “The Old Rugged Cross”
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.
O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left his glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.
In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see,
For ‘twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.
To the old rugged cross I will ever be true,
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
The he’ll call me some day to my home far away,
Where his glory forever I’ll share.
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.
#361 “Rock of Ages”
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From thy wounded side which flowed,
Be the sin the double cure;
Save from wrath and make me pure.
Not the labors of my hands can
Fulfill thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and thou alone.
Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to the cross I cling;
Naked, come to thee for dress;
Helpless, look to thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die.
While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyes shall close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See thee on thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in thee.
#140 “Great is thy Faithfulness”
Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with thee;
Thou chang-est not, thy compassions, they fail not;
As thou hast been, thou forever wilt be.
Refrain
Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed thy hand hath provided;
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
Summer and winter and spring-time and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.
Refrain
Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed thy hand hath provided;
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
Refrain
Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed thy hand hath provided;
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
#528 “Nearer my God to Thee”
Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
Even though it be a cross that raise-th me,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to thee;
Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
Darkness be over me, my rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I’d be nearer, my God, to thee;
Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
There let the way appear, steps unto heaven;
All that thou send-est me, in mercy given;
Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to thee;
Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
Then, with my waking thoughts bright with thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs Bethel I’ll raise;
So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to thee;
Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
Or if, on joyful wing cleaving the sky,
Sun, moon, and starts forgot, upward I fly,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to thee;
Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
#399 “Take My Life and Let It Be”
Take my life, and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to thee.
Take my moments and my days;
Let them flow in ceaseless praise.
Take my hands, and let then move
At the impulse of thy love.
Take my feet, and let them be
Swift and beautiful for thee.
Take my voice, and let me sing
Always, only, for my King.
Take my lips, and let them be
Filled with messages from thee.
Take my silver and my gold;
Not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect,
And use every power as thou shalt choose.
Take my will, and make it thine;
It shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is thine own;
It shall be thy royal throne.
Take my love, my Lord,
I pour at thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself, and I will be
Ever, only, all for thee.

*HYMN #673 “And God Be With You Till We Meet Again”
God be with you till we meet again;
By his counsels guide, uphold you,
With his sheep securely fold you;
God be with you till we meet again.
God be with you till we meet again;
Neath his wings securely hide you,
Daily manna still provide you;
God be with you till we meet again.
God be with you till we meet again;
When life’s perils thick confound you,
Put his arms unfailing round you;
God be with you till we meet again.
God be with you till we meet again;
Keep love’s banner floating over you,
Smite death’s threatening wave before you;
God be with you till we meet again.

Greeting – Corrine Sterns
To fulfill the ancient promise of salvation, O God,
you made a covenant with our ancestors
and pledged them descendants more numerous than the stars.
Grant that all people may share in the blessings of your covenant,
accomplished through the death and resurrection of your Son
and sealed by the gift of your Spirit. Amen.
Please stand as you are able at *.
*CALL TO WORSHIP (responsive) Corrine Sterns
One: When we feel abandoned and alone, unable to find a way out of the wilderness that surrounds, we cry out to God…
ALL: And God listens to us.
One: When we feel discouraged and defeated, unsure we will ever really be able to make ends meet and worried that no matter how hard we work, it will never be enough, we cry out to God…
ALL: And God listens to us.
One: When we feel lost and forgotten, unable to find the words for the grief, isolation, and despair that we feel, our hearts cry out to God…
ALL: And God pays attention to us.
One: As we gather in this place and time, remember: You are not alone. God knows where you are, and God listens to the cries of our hearts.
ALL: May we also listen to one another as God guides us toward the cool, refreshing waters we need to continue on our journey as the family of God.

*Hymn UMH #417 “O For a Heart to Praise My God”
O for a heart to praise my God,
A heart from sin set free,
A heart that always feels thy blood
So freely shed for me.
A heart resigned, submissive, meek,
My great Redeemer’s throne,
Where only Christ is heard to speak,
Where Jesus reigns alone.
A humble, lowly, contrite heart,
Believing, true, and clean,
Which neither life nor death can part
From Christ who dwells within.
A heart in every thought renewed
And full of love divine,
Perfect and right and pure and good,
A copy, Lord, of thine.
Thy nature, gracious Lord, impart;
Come quickly from above;
Write thy name upon my heart,
Thy new, best name of Love.
1st READING: Genesis 21:8-21 (NRSVUE) Corrine Sterns
The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, playing with her son Isaac. So she said to Abraham, “Cast out this slave woman with her son, for the son of this slave woman shall not inherit along with my son Isaac.” The matter was very distressing to Abraham on account of his son. But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed because of the boy and because of your slave woman; whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for it is through Isaac that offspring shall be named for you. As for the son of the slave woman, I will make a nation of him also, because he is your offspring.” So Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed and wandered about in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.
When the water in the skin was gone, she cast the child under one of the bushes. Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot, for she said, “Do not let me look on the death of the child.” And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept. And God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Do not be afraid, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. Come, lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make a great nation of him.” Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
God was with the boy, and he grew up; he lived in the wilderness and became an expert with the bow. He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
Psalm 71:1-12, UMH Page 794 Corrine Sterns
Response: O Lord, you are my hope, my trust, Lord, from my youth.
R
In you, O Lord, do I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame!
In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me;
incline your ear to me, and save me!
Be to me a rock of refuge,
a strong fortress, to save me,
for you are my rock and my fortress.
Upon you I have leaned from my birth;
it was you who took me from my mother’s womb.
My praise is continually of you. R
I have been an example to many,
for you are my strong refuge.
My mouth is filled with your praise
and with your glory all the day.
Do not cast me off in the time of old age;
forsake me not when my strength is spent.
For my enemies speak concerning me,
those who watch for my life consult together, saying,
“God has forsaken him;
pursue and seize him,
for there is no deliverer.”
O God, be not far from me;
O my God, make haste to help me! R
Special Music:
2nd Reading: Romans 6:1b-11 (NRSVUE) Corrine Sterns
What then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may increase? By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? Do you not know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we were buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.
For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, so we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all, but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Gospel Reading: Matthew 10:24-39 (NRSVUE) Pastor Alison Dix
“A disciple is not above the teacher nor a slave above the master; it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household!
“So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered and nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, fear the one who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.
“Everyone, therefore, who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven, but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven.
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace but a sword.
For I have come to set a man against his father,
and a daughter against her mother,
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law,
and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household.
“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.

SERMON: “Dalia and Dads- Love in many forms” Message by Pastor Alison Dix
HYMN #2120 TFWS “Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness”
Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
Blow through the wilderness calling and free;
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness,
Stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.
You moved on the waters,
You called to the deep,
Then you coaxed up the mountains
From the valleys of sleep;
And over the eons you called to each thing:
Wake from your slumbers and rise on your wings.
Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
Blow through the wilderness calling and free;
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness,
Stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.
You swept through the desert,
You stung with the sand,
And you goaded your people
With a law and a land;
And when they were blinded
With their idols and lies,
Then you spoke through your prophets
to open their eyes.
Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
Blow through the wilderness calling and free;
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness,
Stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.
You sang in a stable,
You cried from a hill,
Then you whispered in silence
When the whole world was still;
And down in the city
You called once again,
When you blew through your people
On the rush of the wind.
Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
Blow through the wilderness calling and free;
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness,
Stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.
You call from tomorrow,
You break ancient schemes,
From the bondage of sorrow
The captives dream dreams,
Our women see visions,
Our men clear their eyes,
With bold new decisions
Your people arise.
Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
Blow through the wilderness calling and free;
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness,
Stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.
Prayer Time
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen

PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Listening God, you hear the cries we whisper and the cries we cannot speak. In a world still marked by fear, abandonment, and unfairness, you remain the one who listens and who hears the voices of the outcast, the wounded, the overlooked. As we bring our offerings today, open our ears as yours are open. Make our giving an act of solidarity with those whose voices rise in need. Use these gifts to reveal your presence, to bring water into desert places, and to remind all your children that they are not alone. Shape us into people who hear because we have been heard. Amen.
*HYMN UMH #506 “Wellspring of Wisdom”
Wellspring of Wisdom, hear our cry.
The way ahead is parched and dry.
We seek a source to satisfy our thirst
For sanctifying waters,
Wisdom for your faith filled sons and daughters.
Dawn of a New Day, put to flight
The terrors of a nuclear night.
As bearers of your loving light,
We huddle closer to your fire,
Lift the lamp of hope a little higher.
Garden of Grace, your gifts abound,
The sacred signs are all around,
The whole of earth is holy ground.
We learn, from all of life expressing,
How to grow in sowing seeds of blessing.
Call to Compassion, help us bring
Our burning need for nurturing,
The emptiness of everything
To your embrace, as we endeavor
To proclaim you holy name forever.

Prayer for at home:
O, God, you are the one who hears the cries not heard by human ears. Our earthly existence reveals much injustice and harm in our world, even this very day. Forgive us, we pray, when we are participants. Make us aware of our complicity and sensitize our ears to hear the cries of the needy. And God, we also are the needy ones; give us confidence to pray again, to cry out again to you with the hope that you will again hear our voices and reveal your Presence.
